Check Fraud

Protect yourself from check fraud & scams.

Check fraud is one the rise, and it often starts with something as simple as stolen mail. Stay one step ahead of fraud.

Why this matters

Check fraud is rising—even as check usage declines—due to mail theft, check washing, and counterfeit activity. At the same time, scammers are combining check fraud with impersonation and social engineering tactics.

How Check Fraud Works

A normal check process is simple—but when stolen, criminals may

  • Alter the check (“washing”)

  • Forge signature

  • Create counterfeit checks

Common Scam + Check Fraud Combo

Scammers may

  1. Send you a fraudulent check

  2. Ask you to send part of the money back

  3. Disappear before the check is returned unpaid

You are responsible for funds withdrawn—even if the check was fake.
